The classroom environment is the laboratory of student learning. In the classroom, the student will either feel safe and inclusive and able to become a productive contributor to his/her own learning or become disengaged from the learning process. Students feel a connection to teachers where there is trust and caring that is tangible and obvious.

The teacher must maintain the focus of the classroom discussion on the subject matter by teacher-posed questions. When a student response is correct, it is not difficult to maintain academic focus. However, when the student response is incorrect, this task is a little more difficult. The teacher must redirect the discussion to the task at hand, and at the same time not devalue the student response. If a student is ridiculed or embarrassed by an incorrect response, the student may shut down and not participate thereafter in classroom discussion.

Through participation, students begin to realize their contributions have a place in a comprehensive discussion of a topic. Participation engages students in active learning, while increasing their self-confidence as they realize their ideas are necessary for group success. Students also play the role of observer. As previously stated, behavioral theorists believe that through observation, a human’s mind begins to make sense of the world around them as they decide to mimic or avoid certain behaviors.
