All of those myths I had in my mind vanished into thin air. I wanted to get other people to enjoy it as much as I did. I wanted people to stop overlooking embroidery. It was a really simple idea that I couldn't believe wasn't already being put to practice: re-introducing embroidery for a new generation with contemporary, updated designs. In other words, steering clear of motifs like teddy bears and bunnies, which had earned embroidery the reputation of being out of date, out of touch, and not something that a modern woman or man would do.

VH: Now, as a professional designericrafter, is there an equally important moment for you? CD: I never thought of myself as being a designer, much less a professional designer. I remember being asked to speak at Hobby Industries Association (HIA) one time-as a designer, to the designers. I didn't know where I fit in. I didn't realize that what I was making up and doing on the air made me a designer. VH: Is there a memory that stays with you? CD: I suppose it's more of a group memory of the many things that went wrong Because I was doing everything live and learning as I went, there were a lot of goofy things that happened-like trying to demonstrate how easy and clever this new wraparound quick-sew dress was, and not being able to get out of it while we were still on the air.

ER: VH: What is it? I'm not sure if it's a male/ female thing, or if it's that art has always been more respected than craf( but something's going on. My brother, who obviously was raised by my mom and me (two crafters), avoids that word at all costs. But he bought your book, 45 and he's a 31-year-old firefighter. He refuses to believe that he's crafty, although he totally is. I think there's just something about the word. Do you think in the male community (not to make you speak for all of mankind) but, in this sort of hipster male community, is there a reluctance to use the word craft?
